Lawrence DPW worker shot, killed while working on road, DA says
A Lawrence city worker who was part of a street work crew was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon, according to the Essex District Attorney's Office.Investigators said the victim was a Lawrence Department of Public Works employee who was doing road repair work at the time of the shooting.Sources told 5 Investigates that the DPW worker was the unintended target of a drive-by shooting and was shot several times in the stomach.“He had started up the street and was working his way down, minding his own business," said witness Robert Ansaldi.Police responded at about 2 p.m. to the area of Andover and Clifton streets for a report of shots fired.“I heard three shots and I come over to the corner of Andover Street, and I notice the DPW worker laying on the ground and a car took off up the street,” Ansaldi said.Officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound at the scene. He was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.The victim has not yet been identified, but relatives said he worked for the city for the better part of two decades. Authorities said they will identify him Thursday morning.The Essex District Attorney's Office and the Lawrence Police Department are investigating the shooting.Video from Sky5 also shows a Massachusetts State Police cruiser was at the scene.Part of the residential neighborhood, which is near the Andover line, was blocked off into the night as authorities continued their investigation.“Nothing like this usually happens over here," Ansaldi said. "It’s pretty quiet for the most part.”Authorities are not commenting on suspects or a possible motive at this time.
